Multiple Nokia Android smartphones in the works?

Nokia

The looming Microsoft acquisition of Nokia’s device business appears to be doing little to put a damper on rumours that the company is forging ahead with development of Android-powered smartphones. China’s Tech.qq today suggests that Nokia is looking to launch a range of Android smartphones, including some higher-range ones. It cites “Silicon Valley sources” at Artesyn Technologies, a company that designs and sells various electronic components and that counts Nokia among its customers.

The report reiterates that the Nokia Normandy (which could be unveiled as the Nokia X at MWC 2014) will be part of the lower-end of this new line of Nokia Android smartphones. It could sell for as low as CNY1500 (about CA$270). It would then be followed by additional smartphones as early as May or June.

Nokia reportedly began working on its Android line about a year and half ago. It now has several models that are nearly ready and awaiting FCC approval. No further details about these future models was provided unfortunately.

With the acquisition set to close, it remains to be seen how this strategy will fit in with Microsoft’s own plans. As we have suggested in the past, Nokia’s smartphones could be used to drive customers towards Windows Phone by delivering an experience that is very similar.
