Mysterious Android device with Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 heads to India for R&D

Zauba import notice for device with MSM8994 processorHow would you like your next device to come with a Qualcomm MSM8994 (Snapdragon 810?) processor, 4GB of DDDR4 RAM, 64GB of onboard storage? These may well be the specifications of the next generation of flagship devices.

India’s Zauba import tracking database shows that such a device has made its way to India on a number of occasions since late June. What it is though remains a bit of a mystery at this point. Zauba only identifies it as “telecom equipment testing purpose” and shows the U.S. as the country of origin. The shipments’ HS code (85437099) tells us only that the devices are “Other machines and apparatus: Other” in a product category of “Electrical machines and apparatus having individual functions, not specified or included elsewhere in this chapter.”

The Snapdragon 810 processor was announced in April but is not expected t hit devices until the first half of 2015. It may well be that Qualcomm or one of its partners is already working with sampling prototypes. It could well be LG if past rumours of it working on a high-end device for the rumoured Android Silver program hold true. Despite the telecom mention, it could also be something other than a smartphone or tablet. One other possibility is that it is related to the new Android Auto initiative.

For now, all we have is a lot of conjecture and someone apparently testing what could be a pretty impressive smartphone or tablet. We’ll have to see how this one plays out in the coming weeks.

Thanks, tipster!
