Older Sony Xperia Z devices Android 4.4 KitKat rollout to start in May 2014

Sony Xperia ZL Android upgradesSony announced back in mid-March that it would upgrade the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z and Xperia ZR to Android 4.4 KitKat sometime in mid-Q2. It not only looks like Sony is on track but it has now updated all the respective product pages to indicate that the update will begin rolling out in May 2014.

The devices are likely to be updated to Android 4.4.2, the current version, but there may be a chance albeit small that it will be the upcoming Android 4.4.3 version as well.

While we now have a narrower time frame during which the rollout will begin, keep in mind that carriers will also need to certify it on their networks. This process will likely push out the update out later in the year. We’ll keep you posted as to when these updates start hitting Canadian devices.

All of these devices launched with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and are now about two years old. The Android 4.4 update will be their third update (following Android 4.2 and Android 4.3 updates). This bodes well for more recent devices such as the Xperia Z1 and upcoming Xperia Z2 in terms of future Android upgrades.
