Rogers launches 700MHz spectrum in Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver

Rogers today announced that it has begun to deploy and use the 700MHz spectrum that it acquired in the last Canadian spectrum auction. Coverage so far includes select Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver communities where Rogers customers will now find that they have coverage in buildings, basements and elevators where they did not before.

“With our beachfront spectrum, we’ll deliver the ultimate mobile video experience to our customers in even more places where they couldn’t access LTE before,” said John Boynton, executive vice president, CMO, Rogers Communications.

Along with the improved coverage in rural areas and inside buildings, the 700MHz spectrum promises to improve video streaming, something that Rogers customers will appreciate as Rogers builds up its online video services. Among these will be plenty of hockey games given that the carrier has also secured Canadian broadcast and multimedia rights for all NHL games, including the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Stanley Cup Final for the next 12 years.

Rogers claims to be the first to roll out 700MHz coverage in Canada but Bell quietly launched it in Upper Hamilton in early April according to MobileSyrup.
