Is this the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime?

Rumoured Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime

Three images of the alleged Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime surfaced this weekend. The source that provided them to PhoneArena also indicated that the device is currently undergoing testing. This appears to be supported by recent shipments to Samsung’s testing facility in India.

The new pictures show a device very similar to the Samsung Galaxy S5 that launched in April after being announced at Mobile World Congress. One key difference is the metal (likely aluminium) body with a dimpled texture back. The speaker also appears to have been moved to the bottom of the device from the back, likely to improve sound quality while resting on its back.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime is also expected to sport a slightly larger 5.2-inch display sporting a higher WQHD (2560×1440) resolution. It could outclass the Galaxy S5 with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor and 3GB of RAM. With Android 4.4.3 reportedly just around the corner, it could come with that version preinstalled as well.

Samsung is reportedly looking to launch the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime in the U.S. ahead of the LG G3 launch. If so, Samsung is likely aiming for a June launch.

Rumoured Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime

Should the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime follow the original Galaxy S5 by about three months, it will be interesting to see how Samsung positions it to avoid a backlash from those who purchased the original model when Samsung failed to announce the Prime model at Mobile World Congress as many had expected. It could simply release it in limited quantities at a significantly higher price.
