Samsung Gear 2 Solo said to launch at IFA 2014

Samsung Gear2Samsung will host its next Unpacked event on September 3. While most of the attention will be on the Galaxy Note 4, Samsung is expected to unveil additional devices and accessories as well. A number of rumours have suggested that the Samsung Gear VR headset will be among them along with new wearables. The Korea Herald today reports that the Samsung Gear Solo (or Gear 2 Solo) smartwatch will be among these as well.

The Samsung Gear Solo has been the topic of a number of rumours over the past few months. With its own SIM, it is expected to be a standalone device able to make and receive calls without needing to be tethered to another device. The report adds that it will only support 3G connectivity.

With Android Wear not supporting SIM cards at this point, it is likely that Samsung will use Tizen to power the Gear Solo. This is supported by earlier rumours that add that it will also come with an integrated camera, GPS, Bluetooth and a heart monitor. Little else is known about it so far but it should look very similar to current Gear 2 smartwatches (pictured above).

Strangely, the report indicates that the Samsung Gear Solo will be showcased on September 4 but Samsung’s Unpacked event is set to for September 3. We’re probably reading too much into this and expect Samsung to unveil the watch during Unpacked and later show it off at its IFA 2014 booth.
