Sony begins rolling out Android 4.4.4 KitKat update

Sony Xperia Z1CompactGoogle began pushing out Android 4.4.4 KitKat to Nexus devices last week. You’d expect that the next round of updates would be headed to Google Play edition or perhaps that Motorola devices given that it has been pushing out updates nearly as quickly as Google (being owned by Google does help). You would not expect Sony Mobile to be among the first but that’s exactly what has happened. The latest Android update is already on its way to a number of its Xperia devices.

Android 4.4.4 is not a major update but it does include a fix for an an OpenSSL bug that can leave you vulnerable to a man-in-the-middle type of attack. As such, it may not be the most glamorous update ever but it is one that you want to have. And owners of the the Sony Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra are starting to receive it as software package build version 14.4.A.0.108.

As usual, the exact timing for the update notification to hit your device will vary based on your carrier and country:

Software updates are released at different times depending on operator and/or country. Therefore, we cannot give you an exact date for when a specific update will be available for your device.

If you have not seen the update notification yet on your device, you can trigger a manual check via Settings -> About phone -> System Updates -> Check now.

Oddly, the update has not been released yet for more recent devices like the Xperia Z2 and Xperia M2.
