Android Wear 5.1.1 update now rolling out to all compatible devices

Apps drawer on Android WearWhen Google unveiled Android Wear 5.1.1 last month, it indicated that the latest update would initially be available only for the new LG Watch Urbane. More recently, we’ve seen the update begin to land on the ASUS ZenWatch. Google yesterday announced via its help forums that the update is now beginning to roll out to all compatible devices.

Among the new features included in Android Wear 5.1.1 are always-on support for apps, a new launcher and wrist gestures, the ability to draw emojis to reply to messages, heads-up notifications that appear on-screen even when you’re looking at something else on your watch, support for multiple watches, the ability to set the font size and a new “Screen lock” feature.

Google has also confirmed that the new Wi-Fi support will only be available on the LG Watch Urbane, Moto 360, Sony Smartwatch 3 and Samsung Gear Live.

The Android Wear 5.1.1 rollout is now underway with some LG G Watch and LG G Watch R owners reporting that they have already received the update. It is a gradual rollout so you may have to be a bit patient to see the update as it could take up to a few weeks to reach you.

You will need to make sure that you have the latest version of the Android Wear app on your phone. To check that you do, simply visit the Google Play page for the app and update if the option is offered to you.
