Cubi communicator smartwatch for children

Beluvv CubiWearables are not just for grown-ups. Or so believes Beluvv, the company behind the Beluvv Cubi “Star Trek-like Communicator for Smart Kids.” Worn on the wrist like a smartwatch, the Cubi is geared at children from ages 3 to 10 for whom smartphones may still be too complicated (as well as too expensive and not solid enough). The Cubi is their own robotic pal who can let them send and receive voice messages while making it easier for parents to make sure that they are safe at all times.

Communication is at the heart of the Cubi. Voice messages can be sent to other Cubis as well as smartphones running the Cubi app. Parents control who is allowed to communicate with their children. In a way, the Cubi can be seen as the precursor to different electronic communication methods such as text messages and tweets. Children can easily “share their daily finding from big to small, things like jokes, ups and downs or even special codes within their circle and so on.”

Built-in GPS also ensures that parents can quickly know where their children are and set up safety zones. An Emergency Alert button also makes it easy for children to let their parents know when they are in trouble.

The Beluvv Cubi uses a 3G SIM to send and receive its voice messages. It also packs GPS and NFC technology as well as a flashlight. The watch head is also removeable and can be instead attached to a backpack or belt. It also has a watch stand so that it can be used on a desk or night table.

The companion Cubi app will be available for both Android and iOS.

Beluvv recently kicked off a Kickstarter campaign to build the Cubi. It is looking to raise US$100,000 for the project. Early birds will get a Cubi in their choice of colour (blue, green, pink and orange are offered) for US$99 with shipments slated to begin in July 2015.

The Beluvv Cubi is not the first wearable to be aimed at children that we have featured on EyeOnMobility. Do you believe that there is a market for such devices?
