Concept Sunday: Cyclus smartwatch

Cyclus smartwatch conceptThis week’s concept device is one that has been around for almost a year. The Cyclus smartwatch is conceived around an interesting premise: That technology has somehow made our lives more complicated and “the more the gadgets the more the fuzz.” The idea behind the Cyclus is to return to those less complicated times without giving up the convenience of technology:

Companies now try to stick everything inside a watch and they end up with a complicated design offering a crappy experience. There is an alternative to this. An object both useful and attractive, designed without exaggerations. Our simple formula: A primitive shape accompanied with an innovating and elegant user interface.

Rolled around your wrist like a watch. So accessible to you and yet so easy to forget it even exists.

The Cyclus connects with your smartphone and acts as “a personal assistant helping you track your fitness and an interpreter to your smartphone.” The interface is clean and simple and can be controlled via the touchscreen display. But it will not let you write an email or call out or perform more than these rudimentary tasks “because we simple [sic] don’t want you to go crazy.”

Sensors, including a pedometer, are built into the strap and would presumably offer a range of biometric information including steps taken to date.

So far, there is nothing really unusual about the Cyclus. Throw in a small secondary display on the rear side and tings get more interesting. Facing you without you having to flick your wrist, it provides a discrete way to check the time or a new notification. If you need more, flick your wrist and the main display will activate and show you additional information.
