Lenovo CEO confirms new Moto 360 coming this summer

Motorola - A Lenovo companyThat Motorola will launch new wearables this year is a given. In fact, the company already confirmed as much back in March. If there was any doubt that a new Moto smartwatch was coming, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing dispelled them a few days back in an interview with UK’s The Telegraph. “We have many new models in development with the Moto brands so you may see in summer us launching some very exciting products, including phones and watches.” he said while attending the company’s TechWorld event in Beijing.

If nothing else, it gives us a rough time frame as to when Motorola plans on unveiling the oft-rumoured second-generation Moto 360 smartwatch and next-generation Moto X flagship smartphone. No specific dates were provided but Motorola has traditionally unveiled its flagship smartphones in the August time frame and could do so again this year with a new Moto 360 smartwatch in tow.

Yuanquing’s comment also hints at more than one smartwatch but it remains to be seen if Motorola will indeed offer more than one model this year. If it does, it could well be that one will be Lenovo-branded as the company plans to continue leveraging its two brands to maximize its market share in various global markets.

While Lenovo may be open to using more than Android for its mobile devices, it reconfirmed that its Motorola brand will continue to use Android exclusively. “There are no plans to start launching operating systems other than Android. One of the key differentiators for us is the pure Android experience, and we’re deeply proud of that, because we believe it brings a much better software experience to consumers, and faster upgrades,” explained Colin Giles, Motorola’s global sales leader.

Lenovo yesterday announced that Chen Xudong would take over the roles of Executive Vice President of Lenovo Mobile Business Group and Chairman of the Motorola Mobility management board from Liu Jun.

Rest assured that we’ll bring you any further news about the launch of a new Moto 360 smartwatch as soon as we hear more.
