Samsung Gear S2 to be compatible with iOS by end of March?

Samsung Gear S2 classic in rose goldSamsung officially confirmed at CES 2016 that it was working on making the Gear S2 smartwatch compatible with iOS. The announcement was made when it unveiled new Rose Gold and Platinum versions of the Samsung Gear S2 classic. No timelines were given at the time beyond a generic “later this year” but it now appears that an update could happen before the end of the month. Needless to say, such a move will allow Samsung to target iPhone users for its round smartwatch.

To enable iOS compatibility, Samsung will release both a firmware update for the Gear S2 itself as well as a new iOS version of the Gear Manager app. This new version of the app will presumably offer all of the features found on the Android version with exceptions for Samsung specific apps such as Samsung Pay that require a Samsung smartphone.

Given that there has yet to be an official Samsung statement, take this report with a pinch of salt and treat it as rumour until Samsung makes an official announcement.

It also remains to be seen how many iPhone users Samsung will be able to sway away from picking up an Apple Watch when the Gear S2 does become compatible with iOS.
