Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch to be unveiled in September?

Samsung Gear S2 and S2 ClassicSamsung last year changed the way it released smartwatches. Rather than unveiling a flurry of smartwatches as it had done in previous years, it unveiled only one collection, the Samsung Gear S2, at IFA 2015. Two lines were offered, the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 classic (pictured above). Since then, it has introduced a number of variants but has remained focused on this one collection rather than introducing completely different models. A report today suggests that it is now getting ready to unveil a new collection to succeed the Gear S2. The Korea Herald reports that it will unveil the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch at IFA 2016 in September.

Much as it did with the Gear S2 by de GRISOGONO, Samsung will once again collaborate with  Swiss luxury jeweler de Grisogono to offer a high-end luxury limited edition version of the Gear S3. A de Grisogono official reportedly confirmed that “We are currently collaborating with Samsung to develop its next-generation smartwatch.”

The US$15,000 Samsung Gear S2 de Grisogono appears to be selling quite well. The same official said that the Swiss jeweler is shipping some 100 watches, each decorated with more than 120 diamonds, every month.

While the Gear S3 is expected to launch in 2016, the blinged-out de Grisogono version will reportedly debut at Baselworld 2017 alongside other high-end watches (and a growing number of smartwatches if this year’s Baselworld was any indication).

No details about the Samsung Gear S3 were provided. An earlier report suggested that Samsung may develop a new processor for it and other wearables. It could use a single Cortex-A7 core with lower clock speed to extend battery life. More emphasis may also be given to optimizing battery usage of the collection of sensor data.

IFA 2016 is scheduled to take place from September 2nd to September 7th. Samsung has used the event the last few years to unveil its latest Samsung Galaxy Note phablet and other devices set to launch before the crucial holiday shopping season.
