Apple readying 12.9-inch iPad for early 2015

Apple Store - Ginza, Tokyo, JapanRumours of a 12.9-inch Apple iPad first surfaced more than a year ago. They culminated earlier this year with a report that Apple had decided to either cancel it completely or at least put it on the back burner. Bloomberg today suggests that it was the latter and that Apple is getting ready to put it back on the front burner for launch in 2015.

Citing unnamed source, the report goes on to indicate that Apple’s suppliers will begin production of the tablet by the first quarter of next year. They add that it will indeed come with a 12.9-inch display but reveal little else about it.

Apple is said to have restarted its 12.9-inch iPad project in a bid to halt its declining tablet sales. While still its second-biggest product by revenue, sales have dropped for the last two consecutive quarters. The larger tablet could help Apple expand the reach of tablets into the business sector where they could replace traditional laptops. Schools and governments could also gravitate towards the larger tablets.

In the meantime, Apple is expected to announce a refresh of its current iPad lineup with new 9.7-inch iPad and 7.9-inch iPad mini models.

Bloomberg is also the latest to indicate that Apple will unveil new iPhones at a press event on September 9. It reconfirms that two models will be offered, one with a 4.7-inch display and another with a 5.5-inch one.
