Netflix adds movie download service

Netflix has launched a new service called “Watch Now” that will let its customers watch movies and television series on their PCs. It is being launched with a catalog of about 1000 shows and movies (compared to 70,000 in its mail order catalog) from studios such as NBC Universal, Sony Pictures, MGM and others.

Customers will need to download a small applet that will allow them to watch up to 48 hours of material per month (depending on the service plan). The applet requires a high-speed Internet connection and a Windows-based computer. It will not work on mobile devices and Macs.

Netflix will deploy the service gradually over the next six months to ensure the best possible experience for its customers.

Unfortunately, the service is only available to US customers.
