Someone has been able to isolate the Mobile Office application (Word, Excel and Powerpoint) in Windows Mobile 6 Standard and extract it and tweak it so that it will run on Windows Mobile 5 devices including Smartphones. If your device will not receive the upgrade, you can now still get Mobile Office running on your device.
Install the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework before you install Mobile Office.
Note: Download and use at your own risk; I doubt very much that you will get any support from your device manufacturer or Microsoft if you run into issues.
