Last week at CES 2008, Microsoft announced during a keynote speech that the Zune was coming to Canada. The comment was made in an almost nonchalant way and it got me thinking. It’s almost certain that Steve Jobs will talk about the iPhone, perhaps to announce the upcoming 1.1.3 update or the latest sales figures. Could he also make an announcement about the iPhone coming in Canada?
Before we all get our hopes up, let’s remember that there are a few obstacles in the way:
- Apple’s insistence on revenue sharing is proving difficult for many carriers to accept. Rogers Wireless would be no different.
- Rogers data plans would make the iPhone a very costly proposition in Canada unless it introduces new rates for iPhones.
- I still have not heard of a settlement to the issue where Comwave owns the trademark rights to the iPhone name in Canada.
I will know tomorrow if the Gadgetorama crystal ball works or if it goes back into the basement.
