Former HTC Executives Launch Kazam Smartphone Company

KazamTwo former executives who left HTC earlier this year have decided to partner again and  step back into the smartphone arena. Michael Coombes, the former head of sales, and James Atkins, the former U.K. marketing chief, have announced plans to launch a new smartphone company called Kazam. The new company promises “stunning design, robust hardware, and intuitive technology, underpinned with improved customer service.”

“There is a real opportunity for a new mobile brand to disrupt the status quo,” Atkins told CNET. “We are passionate about delivering a truly positive mobile experience that doesn’t just stop once you’ve bought the phone.”

Kazam will focus on the European market with Coombes as its CEO and Atkins as its Chief Marketing Officer. It hopes to stand out among its competition by offering better device support but provides no specifics on how it will do so. One possibility would be to ensure that its smartphones are quickly updated to the latest version.

Kazam expects to launch its first smartphones later this year. No details have been provided devices themselves but they will presumably run on Google Android.

To say that Kazam faces an uphill battle is likely an understatement. Well established companies such as HTC, BlackBerry and Nokia, have struggled to remain relevant. A new company with limited resources will be hard-pressed to establish itself. But Coombes is optimistic: “Kazam’s dynamic structure and focus on local markets means we can react quickly to the ever-evolving and diverging needs of today’s consumer.”
