Microsoft now offering gift cards for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8 apps

Microsoft Windows Store gift cards

Just in time for the holidays and the traditional stocking stuffers, Microsoft today announced that app gift cards are now available. The Windows Store Gift Card comes in two denominations. In Canada, you can choose from a CA$25 or CA$50 card whereas in your choices in the U.S. are either US$15 or US$25. They are now available from the online Microsoft Store in Canada and the U.S.

Buy and download apps, games, and more from Windows Store on your Windows 8.1 PC, your Windows Phone 8, or from select Xbox stores. With over 100,000 apps to choose from there’s something for everyone. Plus, this gift card never expires, so you can use it whenever you want.

The Windows Store Gift Cards will presumably eventually make their way to physical Microsoft stores and other retailers. They will likely be found not far from the Xbox gift cards.

There is one caveat you should be aware of: These gift cards cannot be redeemed on earlier versions of Windows and Windows Phone. Even Windows 8 users will need to upgrade to Windows 8.1 to take advantage of these.
