Microsoft pulls ads poking fun at new Apple iPhones

Microsoft "fly in Cupertino" adMicrosoft today released a video ad called “A fly on the wall in Cupertino?” on its Windows Phone YouTube channel that poked fun at the new iPhones (and the iWatch in passing) that Apple unveiled this week. It must have struck a nerve as it was quickly pulled down but not before it was downloaded and reposted.

As the title implies, the video appears to capture a series of internal Apple meetings discussing the new iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S. Ideas are pitched to managers, including ones who look like Steve Jobs (or Tim Cook?) and another like Jony Ive. The ads never mention Windows Phone or even Microsoft but end with the familiar #timetoswitch hashtag. Have a look for yourselves:

Microsoft quickly pulled the ad down and later issued the following statement: “The video was intended to be a light-hearted poke at our friends from Cupertino. But it was off the mark, and we’ve decided to pull it down.”

Perhaps Microsoft should talk to Nokia’s people and hire the company behind the latest Nokia Lumia 1020 ad. It is far more effective than what essentially amounted to nothing more than a cheap looking attack ad.
