Sony Mobile announced last month that older Xperia devices such as the Xperia Z would be upgraded to Android 4.4 KitKat starting this month. It has now made good on that promise in Canada with Android 4.4.2 updates now rolling out to both the Sony Xperia Z and the Xperia ZL. Similar updates began last week for the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra.
Along with the OS update, the new software includes updates to Sony apps and adds compatibility to SmartWear apps such as LifeLog.
Both the Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL were announced at CES 2013 and launched with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. They were carried by a range of Canadian carriers including Bell, Mobilicity, MTS, Rogers, Videotron and WIND Mobile. The Android 4.4.2 update is their third update, following Android 4.2 and Android 4.3 updates.
If you have yet to receive the notification, you can check for the update manually via Settings -> About phone -> System Updates -> Check now. The update can also be installed via Sony’s PC Companion software.
