BBM for Android tops 50 million downloads

BlackBerry BBMSharp eyes over at IntoAndroid have noticed that BBM for Android has now surpassed the 50 million download mark.  Google Play lists the number of installs at between 50,000,000 and 100,000,000. It only took a little over six months for the company to hit the milestone.

BBM for Android and iOS launched in October after a false start in late September. It was downloaded 10 million times in the first day alone. BlackBerry has since released a number of updates, adding features such as BBM Voice, BBM Channels and stickers. It even released a version specifically for Android Gingerbread.

With BBM now available for Windows Phone as well, BlackBerry now has about 85 million active monthly users. While the numbers are impressive, a number of instant message competitors have long passed it. For example, WhatsApp now has over 500 million users and Kik has over 100 million.
