Concept Sunday: Google Nexus X

Google Nexus X conceptA recent spate of rumours suggests that Google will unveil its next generation Nexus devices in mid-October. It appears that Google will once again again release a tablet and a smartphone although some rumours suggest we could see more than one smartphone. While HTC is expected to manufacture the tablet, it looks like Google has turned to Motorola for its next Nexus smartphone. Numerous signs point to the Google Nexus X (or Nexus 6) being a 5.9-inch phablet. We’ve already seen one render and this week Ramon Rivas presented his own take on the upcoming device.

Here’s a concept design I made of the Nexus X in my free time. It is heavily influenced by the design choices the Moto X and the Nexus 5. Features speakers facing the front, dual flash, and the Motorola dimple.

Rivas’ concept is very similar to the one we saw earlier but differs in small ways. For example, the twin flashes are not embedded in the camera ring and it retains the Motorola dimple (which previous rumours suggest will make way for a fingerprint scanner). The buttons also appear to be much more flush to the sides than on 9to5Google‘s render. Rivas has also added a screenshot of Android L, the next version of Android and the one expected to come on the Nexus X.

While this concept will be familiar to Moto X and Google Nexus 5 owners and may appeal to them, the biggest challenge for the Nexus X may be its size. With a 5.9-inch display, this will not be a small device.

Rivas provides no specifications but previous rumours indicate that the Google Nexus X will come with a 5.92-inch display sporting a WQHD resolution (2,560×1440 / 498 PPI ), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of interal storage, a 13MP rear camera capable of shooting 4K UHD video, a 2MP front camera, a 3,200mAh battery.
