Concept Sunday: Pocket Aether Perambulator (Steampunk Mobile Phone)

Pocket Æther Perambulator conceptToday’s installment of Concept Sunday features something a little different. Presenting the Pocket Æther Perambulator better known outside of the Steampunk universe as a mobile phone.

Designed by Andrew James Gowland (also known as Technohippy), the flip phone opens in landscape orientation to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard and a monochrome display to view the Ætheric web and a magnetic resonance speaker/microphone. It also sports nice touches we don’t see normally on modern smartphones. Among them are a fob ring to attach it to a gentleman’s pocket chain, a beautifully etched metal body, and an external clock.

Roughly the same size as the Nokia N95, the Pocket Æther Perambulator boasts the following:

  • Fob ring – for attaching to a gentleman’s pocket chain
  • External Chronograph – with visible mechanism
  • External Camera Obscura – for capturing magical images which might take ones fancy
  • Internal Camera Obscura – for presenting images of your own visage whilst communing over the Ætheric web
  • Miniaturised QWERTY typewriter – to aid in the preparation of Æthergrammes
  • Ætheric plasma picture frame – for viewing the Ætheric web
  • Internal magnetic resonance speaker/microphone
  • Dedicated buttons for accessing the Ætheric web
  • Exquisite external engraving and name plate bearing the following information ‘The Pocket Æther Perambulator – enabling communion across Ætheric space. As presented by Prof. A. J. G. Wellsby’

As far as concepts go, there is little chance that we will ever see the Pocket Æther Perambulator be released as a functioning device but it would not be out of place in a Steampunk movie or videogame.
