Google Chromecast coming to “many more countries” within weeks

Google Chromecast

Hints in early February suggested that Google was about to make its Chromecast dongle available in more countries than just the U.S. The rumoured timeline spoke of a launch “within weeks” and possibly as early as March 1 in the U.K. That date came and went without any launch unfortunately. But Sundar Pichai, Google’s Senior Vice President of Chrome and Apps, confirmed today that the multimedia streaming dongle is coming to “many more countries.” He made the confirmation during a keynote speech at SXSW.

Unfortunately, Pichai provided no further details. We are still in the dark as to exactly when and where the Google Chromecast will be offered in what could be the first round of international expansion. Let’s hope that Canada is among those countries.

As for sales of the US$35 device, Pichai said that “millions” had already been sold and that sales continued to grow. It’s clear that there’s an appetite for this device outside of the U.S. as well and Google will likely sell a few more million when it does open up international sales. In the meantime, some have been able to get their hands on the Chromecast through third party vendors. Even Amazon offered it internationally for some time before putting a halt to such sales.
