Nokia to livestream MWC 2014 press event

Nokia teaser for MWC 2014 eventNokia will hold a press conference at MWC 2014. Taking place Monday, February 24 from 0830 to 0930 CET (0230 to 0330 ET), the event is widely expected to see the announcement of the Nokia X, Nokia’s first Android powered smartphone. If there was any doubt left, today’s teaser image with four images pointing towards each other to form an X should be good validation that this will indeed be the case.

If you’re not going to MWC 2014, you will be able to catch the event in the comfort of your favourite chair as Nokia today also revealed that it will livestream the event via its Nokia Conversations page.

The Nokia X is widely expected to be an inexpensive device aimed at emerging markets. It could sell for as low as CA$115 to CA$130. Clearly an entry-level device, it is expected to come with a forked version of Google Android (without Google Mobile services and apps), a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, a 4-inch FWVGA (480×854/~285PPI), 512MB of RAM, 4GB of onboard storage and a 5MP rear camera.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s handset business is set to close later this quarter. It remains to be seen what it will do with the Nokia X (and other rumoured Android devices) once the deal closes. We believe that Microsoft will not cancel the devices but use them to phase out the Asha line and use them to ramp users up to Windows Phone.
