Samsung Galaxy S5 to be followed by Galaxy S5 mini and Galaxy S5 Zoom?

Samsung Galaxy S5 conceptThe confusion about the Samsung Galaxy S5 specifications may have been put to rest today (or not). SamMobile claims to have landed key details thanks to a company insider.

The plastic or metal rumours have now swayed back into the ‘both’ camp. It appears again that Samsung will offer both metal and plastic variants. It’s still not clear though whether the metal model will launch as a Galaxy S or Galaxy F device. As for the other details, here is what we are told today:

  • Processor: Samsung Exynos 6 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 (depending on market)
  • Operating system: Google Android 4.4 KitKat (likely with TouchWiz)
  • Cellular connectivity: LTE
  • Display: 5.25-inch WQHD (2560×1440) AMOLED
  • Rear-facing camera: 16MP

A number of details are still not confirmed. Among them is the display size and whether the 16MP camera will sport hardware OIS. On the processor front, Samsung has yet to announce the Exynos 6 (which did not materialize at CES 2014) but it is expected to both support LTE and support all eight cores simultaneously. If so, Samsung could use the Snapdragon 805 in the plastic variant and the Exynos 6 in the metal one.

The metal variant will sell for about €800 (about CA$1200) with the plastic one going for about €650 (about CA$970). Both could be announced in mid-March at a dedicated event in London, UK.

Much as Samsung did with the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy S5 will be followed a bit later by both the Galaxy S5 mini and Galaxy S5 Zoom. Both are expected to come with Super AMOLED displays and Android 4.4. The former could be announced in June with the latter preceding it by a month.

A rumoured ruggedized Galaxy S5 Active was not mentioned in this latest report.
