VideoLAN to add Chromecast support to VLC

Google Chromecast

Google’s Chromecast dongle which lets you cast a variety of media content from your smartphone or tablet already supports a wide range of apps. More are coming all them time and among them will soon be the very popular VLC app.

In a series of forum posts, the VideoLAN team has confirmed that it is working on adding the feature to their media player app. Lead OS X and iOS developer Felix Paul Kühne told Gigaom that the feature will be included in the next update of the iOS app. No specific timelines were provided for its release but it could be within the next four to six weeks. Kühne added that the feature will be added to the Android version once the iOS version ships, putting a launch out to the fall at the very earliest.

Kühne also confirmed that the company is working on similar implementations for Windows, Linux and Mac. Those will take “a bit longer because it’s harder” as a native SDK for these operating systems is not yet available.
