New Xiaomi Mi Band Pulse adds heart rate monitor

Xiaomi Mi Band PulseXiaomi launched its Mi Band fitness tracker last year. According to Canalys, more than 10 million have shipped since then. Just in time for China’s Singles Day, a shopping day even bigger than Black Friday, Xiaomi announced the Xiaomi Mi Band Pulse. As rumours suggested earlier this summer, the successor to the original Mi Band adds a heart rate monitor to the mix.

Along with the new light-based PPG (photoplethysmography) sensor embedded on the bottom of the device, Xiaomi also promises improved sleep tracking and an improved rubberized strap material more resistant to breaking.

The Xiaomi Mi Band Pulse also comes with a 45mAh battery (good for 20 or more days), Bluetooth 4.0 LE connectivity, an ADI sensor and is water resistant ( IP67 rating). At 5.5 grams, it is ever so slightly heavier but otherwise looks much like the original model. It is compatible with both Android (4.4 or later) and iOS (iPhone 4S / iOS 7.0 upwards).

Xiaomi will offer the Mi Band Pulse for ¥99 (about US$15 or about CA$21), only slightly more than the original Mi Band. It will go on sale in China on November 11, China’s Singles Day. There is no word yet on international sales but expect this latest band to hit other countries, especially as the original Mi Band is available in the U.S. and other countries via the Mi.com online store.
