Samsung hires former Tangerine co-CEO Lee Don-tae as new design strategist

Samsung NameWhen it comes to mobile device design, aesthetics and build quality, Apple is almost always named among the brands that both consumers and other companies look up to the most. Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, has in recent years upped its game in order to close the gap to its rival with devices like the Galaxy Alpha but still has some way to go. It has now brought on Lee Don-tae as its new design strategist as the company strives to make its products more synonymous with style.

Lee is the former co-CEO of Tangerine, a well-regarded UK-based design firm that was founded by none other than Apple’s own Jony Ive. He joined Samsung earlier this month as vice president and global design chief. In his new role at the company’s Design Management Center, Lee will help define an overall design strategy rather than focus on individual projects. “He will work to elevate Samsung’s design prowess overall rather than focusing on a specific product,” said a Samsung official.

Through Tangerine Lee Don-tae worked with a number of companies including LG, Toyota, British Airways and even Samsung. His work on the redesigned British Airways’ business-class cabin and seating configuration saw the airline’s annual profits increase by about US$738 million. No doubt Samsung will be looking for similar if not better returns.
