Samsung to unveil next smartwatch at IFA 2015 event?

Rumoured Samsung Gear A watch faceSamsung will hold its next Unpacked event next week. The company is expected to unveil both the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge Plus. It was hoped by many (including us) that Samsung’s latest smartwatch, the oft-rumoured Samsung Gear A or Samsung Orbis, would also be unveiled at the event. It now appears that we will have to wait a bit longer unfortunately.

SamMobile now suggests that the new smartwatch will get its own event at IFA 2015 in early September. In fact, “all wearable device announcements” will be made at the event, suggesting that more than one new wearable device will be unveiled.

A number of variants of the Samsung Gear A (which could look like the concept below) will be available. For example, one is expected to include Wi-Fi connectivity in addition to Bluetooth 4.0 LE. It’s not clear what other variations there could be.

Samsung recently confirmed that its next smartwatch will come with a rotating bezel ring as a new interaction method. It will be powered by Tizen 2.3.1 and will sport a round 360 by 360 pixel display. Other expected specifications include a 1.2GHz dual-core Samsung Exynos 3472 processor, 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage, a 250mAh battery and a digital crown.

The report adds that Samsung has begun to test its new Samsung Pay mobile payment service on the new smartwatch. Similar tests have already been run on the smartphones that Samsung will unveil next week. The new service is expected to launch in both the U.S. and South Korea next month.
