Sony Mobile Communications today unveiled SmartBand 2, the successor to its original fitness band. Sony had accidentally revealed the new device back in early June. Today’s announcement confirms that the most notable change is the addition of a heart rate monitor.
Combining data from the accelerometer and the new heart rate monitor allows the SmartBand 2 to track pulse and heart rate variability as well as excitement and stress levels throughout the day.
“We set out to create the most advanced wearable at this section of the market – SmartBand 2 has the capability to deliver, and make biometric data meaningful for users within Lifelog” said Kaz Tajima, Senior Vice President, Head of UX Creative Design and Planning at Sony Mobile Communications. “Not only does it represent a powerful vision of how consumers can learn more about themselves – it allows us to explore exciting new opportunities with development partners.”
As with the original Sony SmartBand, the SmartBand 2 will not only track various activities and your sleep patterns but it will also work with Sony’s Lifelog platform to give you a complete view of your day. Lifelog complements activity information with various social activities and special life events to give you a better summary of your day. It also provides a range of notifications from your smartphone.
