Cancelled Nokia Moonraker smartwatch gets pictured

Nokia Moonraker smartwatchNokia almost got into the smartwatch game a few years back. Its plans to do so were derailed by its decision to sell its devices business to Microsoft in 2014. Focused at the time on developing its own Band fitness tracker, Microsoft cancelled the Nokia Moonraker smartwatch project.

Renders of what Nokia’s smartwatch surfaced last summer courtesy of a Microsoft employee. Now photographs of a worse-for-wear prototype have now surfaced online via China’s Weibo social network. The images reveal little that the renders had not already. The design is tired by today’s standards but would likely have faced a much warmer reception a couple of years back.

One picture confirms it would have come with a touchscreen display, an accelerometer and Bluetooth.

Based on the renders, the Nokia Moonraker would have offered smartwatch functions such as email, messaging, a calendar and customizeable watch faces. Support for apps like  Facebook and MixRadio was also in the cards. It would have been available in a range of colours.

There is no word at this point on whether Microsoft is planning to eventually offer a smartwatch powered by its new Windows 10 operating system. Nokia meanwhile could well be getting into the wearables game at last. Recent job postings suggest that it could soon announce some devices focused on health and fitness.
