Motorola readying summer 2015 return to tablets

While Motorola may be getting ready to launch up to eight new smartphones by the end of the year, work is already underway on devices for 2015. If a rumour this week is any indication, a number of tablets could make their way onto the company’s 2015 product roadmap. Citing a “source close to the situation,” PhoneArena this week reported that Motorola is looking at launching multiple tablets next year.

Few details are available about any of these Motorola tablets. The 7-inch model is currently running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor but could launch with an NVIDIA Tegra K1 SoC.

Three tablets are currently undergoing testing. Furthest along is a 7-inch model. Further behind are both 11- and 12.5-inch models. It’s unclear at this point whether all three will be released. Motorola is currently looking at a summer 2015 launch window. Some if not all could be offered with MotoMaker customization, something that former Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside hinted at earlier this year.

With Lenovo’s acquisition set to close by the end of the year, there could still be changes to Motorola’s product roadmap but early signs are that Lenovo will leverage the current plans into 2015. We may not see the effects of Lenovo’s acquisition until the latter months of 2015 or possibly even 2016.

Motorola last launched tablets back in late 2011.
