Concept Sunday: Samsung BEND bendable tablet

Samsung BEND conceptFlexible displays (and other materials) promise to open a whole new realm of form factors for our mobile devices. Devices such as the LG G Flex have only given us a taste of things to come. Conceived by Robrecht Vanhauwere, the Samsung BEND concept device gives us a glimpse at what might be possible in a few more years. As the name implies, the BEND is a bendable tablet that incorporates a display that can double as kickstand.

The Samsung BEND comes with a flexible display that can bend to an angle of 50. The heaviest components are placed in the lower portion of the body, acting as a weight to prevent the BEND from accidentally tipping over. Bent one way, it can be used for typing and other uses that require accuracy and precision. Bend it the other way and the bottom portion of the screen becomes a stand to keep your tablet propped up while you watch a movie. Or simply keep it straight and use it as a traditional tablet.

The screen can even peel from the flexible frame for more usage options.

The display also curves onto the side so that it can display notifications visible even when the tablet is in your bag. A simple swipe and BEND brings up the appropriate app for you to quickly respond.

The Samsung BEND runs on a modified version of Android that is “visually more pleasing” that blends the homescreen, multitasker and open apps into a single view.
