Concept Sunday: Tri-screen Smartwatch

Tri-screen Smartwatch conceptSmartwatch interactions are often limited by the size of their display. Whereas smartphones with large displays have become popular, watches with large displays remain more of a niche product. Manufacturers have gotten around this limitation in a number of creative ways. For example, the Apple Watch comes with a digital crown, the upcoming Samsung Gear S2 will have a rotating bezel ring and many others incorporate touch displays. Flexible displays hold promise but are still a few years out. The Tri-screen Smartwatch by Christopher Iyad Owen-Elia offers a different solution.

Normally, the Tri-Screen Smartwatch looks like an average smartwatch with a rectangular display. The watch face offers time and other vital information like any other watch. But when you wish for a larger display, the press of a button unfolds the watch to give you a tri-panel display. Just like that, you have twice as much screen real estate, allowing you to see more information at a glance.

In one proposal, the two additional panels, each half the size of the main one slide out from underneath to flank the primary one. In the second, the primary panel is in fact two panels which split to pivot to each side of an additional panel beneath it.

While the former uses the larger display as the primary one, it’s not immediately evident how the panels would expand while worn on the wrist unless the watch is worn loosely. In he second design, the two smaller displays together form the primary display. The seam between the two could prove to be a distraction but could also result in some rather unique watch faces. For example, two dials could be shown or one could be used to show the time while the other shows notifications and alerts. Unfortunately specific details on how both designs work are “currently confidential.”
